Five Great “First Day of School” Scenes in Movies

The first day of school is usually one of the most awkward and the hardest to get through if you’re not attending the same school as usual. If you’ve been there a couple of years it shouldn’t be too bad. At that point you’ve hopefully got friends, you know your way around, and you’re a little more prepared for what’s to come. But the first day back after a long summer break is still rough. You’ve got to get up early again, you’ve got to go to a place you don’t always like, and you’ve got to be there for at least six to eight hours out of your day doing things you don’t necessarily want to do. And aside from that, the first day really seems to set the tone for your year.

Here are a few movies to show what that’s like.

5. Finding Nemo

Nemo is SOOO excited to go to school, it’s just too bad his dad isn’t since he’s afraid of just about everything that could go wrong when it comes to his son. It doesn’t help that Nemo has one underdeveloped fin or that his dad is a constant worrier, but he’s so bound and determined to do things his way that it’s only a matter of time until he’s captured and separated from his father. That’s a rough first day.

4. Billy Madison

This is the quintessential Adam Sandler role it would seem. The man-child that has yet to grow up because he had no reason or desire to is something he knows how to play very well since it seems he plays this in real life. But going back to school all the way from the beginning seems a stretch since most parents wouldn’t be comfortable allowing someone his age into a classroom full of kids.

3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Not only do you tend to need a lot of expensive and sometimes volatile equipment, you also have to be sorted into a house that might pluck you from a nice and comfy friendship into a relationship that’s built on little more than competition. The first day for First Years seems a little daunting to be honest, but it definitely sets the kids on a well-defined path.

2. Back to School

The first day of school in college is no longer like this, but you can imagine the rat race when it came time to select classes. Nowadays kids tend to get in and get their classes taken care of quickly and easily, or they do it online.  I can only imagine what it would have been like to stand in line while someone at the front of the line was trying to make up their mind on what they wanted to take.

1. Revenge of the Nerds

Having never lived in the dorms I couldn’t tell you what it’s really like. But somehow I don’t see jocks being able to kick freshmen out of their dorm rooms that they PAID for and forcing them to live in the gym. Not only does that make for a rough first day but it’s something that would have been handled immediately by most schools.

The first day back to school, one of the roughest times in a kid’s life.
