Agents of SHIELD. just keeps getting more intense (in a good way) as Hive’s origin is revealed on how he became the first Inhuman many, many years ago by Kree Reapers and Daisy has a shaking (pun totally intended) encounter with Mack who desperately tries to get through to her.
I will admit that with the recent news that the Inhumans movie has been taken off the release schedule as its future is unknown, it was definitely weird getting into this episode that is as Inhumans heavy as it could get. Seeing Hive’s backstory was, well, a lot to take in, especially as we saw two living Krees on the screen, something that I thought we would never see on the show. I liked the idea of how far back into history the first Inhuman was made because I always thought it was maybe during the early 1900s that the Krees came to Earth to experiment on humans and turning them into Inhumans.
I don’t know if they went practical with the Kree designs or if we were just watching two men in motion capture suits, but either way, they looked really well done for Agents of SHIELD. The only thing that didn’t sit well with me was how Daisy seemingly had it so easy defeating one of them. I get that she has come a long way and that she has mastered her powers since she went through Terrigenesis last season. But I just figured that it would be somewhat of an challenge for her to go up against the creatures that created the Inhumans. I’m not trying to discredit Daisy for what she is capable of, but this was just something that I felt wasn’t properly thought out because should it really have been that easy? I get why Hive had it easy because, duh, he is the first Inhuman and the one they fear the most.
While I have enjoyed (and been utterly terrified of him) Hive so far, this week I had a minor issue with him which was the way he is talking. Again, this is a minor nitpick, but I for some reason can’t really get behind the way he talks because for some reason, Hive is talking more like an older nobleman or something like that rather than an intimidating force to be reckoned with. While Brett Dalton is nailing the physical intimidation of this character, the voice is just not really working for me. I know his voice hasn’t changed that much since Hive entered the season, but at least in the first few episodes of Agents of SHIELD Season 3B, I was more terrified of him mainly because of how he spoke. I think however I had more issues with Daisy than I did with Hive’s voice, but hopefully when we see his true form — I am guessing we will — that he will sound like an actual beast.
I felt so bad for Mack this week and almost furious about Daisy. She doesn’t come off as someone that is somewhat doing it on her own will while also being Hive-addicted. Instead she was just cray-cray and it was like seeing someone who was heavily part of a cult which I’m never comfortable seeing. I’m OK with their plans to want to turn regular humans into Inhumans though, it was just unsettling seeing Daisy like this, which maybe was the point. At this point, I feel that we are getting a pretty good hint of who is going to die at the end of the season and I think it’s either Daisy (highly unlikely, but possible), Mack or May. Even though Lincoln did what he did in this episode, I feel he is safe for next season as he hasn’t really become the big character yet that I know he can be. I doubt they would kill off Fitz or Simmons, unless we are in for a classic Whedon situation.
Overall, I was slightly mixed with the episode, but it did what it was supposed to do and having the episode end with Daisy offering to let them drain her blood, these two final weeks are going to be insane for Agents of SHIELD.
Agents of SHIELD airs on Tuesday nights at 9/8c on ABC. Make sure to see Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War which opens in theaters this week as next week’s episode of Agents of SHIELD will be an important one after the film.
